Hong Kong Cultural Conversation

Conservation is now recognized worldwide as an important component of sustainable development, particularly in cities undergoing rapid development. In Hong Kong, however, it was not until the recent years that the city's government, citizens and the media have brought more attention to the development of the city's cultural and arts scene and preservation of the former British colony's unique cultural heritage. In response to the social unrest, the government has begun to develop a specific strategy with regard to the arts and culture. One main focus of their strategies lies in the preservation of Hong Kong cultural heritage. However, despite the government’s effort on heritage preservation, what probably is just as frustrating is the Hong Kong government’s awkward attempts at heritage preservation and privatization of public spaces. Is the government making progress to preserve our cultural heritage? Or is it just making progress to transform our heritage into commoditi es and taking further steps to engage in economic exploitation of public space? What elements should be put into consideration when we talk about cultural preservation and urban planning? Where are the missing parts in the design of existing projects to stand a chance of living the metropolitan spaces in accordance with the real needs and hopes of the people who live in the space? Problem that lies behind the positive metropolitan image of Hong Kong Despite the image of Hong Kong as a metropolitan city successful in international finance, commerce and tourism, a deep-rooted problem that lies in Hong Kong people’s heart is a lack of sense of belonging, a lack of Hong Kong identity.During colonial period, Hong Kong has been referred to as a borrowed space and borrowed time. Meanwhile, the differences in culture and civilization between Hong Kong and China created a barrier to Hong Kong people’s identifying themselves as Chinese. â€Å"Hong Kong’s lack of identity is also due to its status as not so much a place as a space of transit, whose residents think of themselves of transients and migrants on their way between China and other cities. Worse still, after the handover in 1977, we have been experiencing limited democracy in our society, as reflected in limited political rights granted to the public and lack of public election mechanism. â€Å"Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong† therefore remains a political slogan and still a goal. Searching for Hong Kong identity continues, and this psychological barrier partly explains why the Hong Kong brands and products often faced the criticism of lacking a unique identity.Conserving cultural heritage as a way to define self identity The limitations on democracy in post-colonial Hong Kong is causing more public outcry to seek expression or confirmation of their identities through preservation of arts and culture. It has been argued that the role of art and culture in Hong Kong has taken on incr easing significance in the city's search for an identity over the past 13 years since China resumed sovereignty over the territory. More and more people identify themselves as Hongkonger and less as Chinese or British colonist.People are defining themselves as Hongkongers and conserving Hong Kong’s heritage, especially architectures and sites where their collective memories came from is part of that self-defining. Along with these attempts is a change in societal expectations. Hong Kong used to be a developers’ dream as economic prosperity over the past 30 years has been largely due to its immense rate of construction. Now people see the paradox that as they are advancing to become a global city they are also losing parts of their lives, thus there emerged voices on conservation. While the Hong Kong government’s heritage policies—or lack thereof—are threatening to destroy what is left of our past that constitutes our cultural identity in the name of development, people start to speak out on preserving what they grew up with and feel it is important to taking the lead in mentoring the next generation about Hong Kong’s history and cultural heritage. The public space in Hong Kong being a battle field In Hong Kong, every inch of land is labeled with an economic value. The high value of land in Hong Kong heightens the level of control and conflict in land use.In the past few years, we have already seen the tenement houses on Wing Lee Street in Central, the Graham Street Market in Central, Lee Tung Street and Queen’s Pier in Wanchai, all being the landmarks of old Hong Kong, earmarked for destruction. We have also seen the privatization of public space at the expenses of public interests: shopping centers in public housing estates originally managed by the Housing Authority have been privatized by The Link; the development of West Kowloon are tilted towards orporate interests not the livelihood of residents; The harbou r front of Hong Kong Island, cut off from the living space of ordinary people, has turned into the backyard of luxurious private residential complexes or giant shopping mall housing all the big global brands; the Central seafront reclamation area also falls into the same fate -it is designed as an extension of government offices and the huge Mody Mall, instead of being considered for cultural and recreational use as demanded by the Hong Kong public.Urban and social planning on land use and distribution of wealth shows a tendency of being biased towards corporate and capitalists’ interests. Hong Kong people are yet to have a say to the use of their own space and this has given rise to many social problems such as public’s opposition sentiment towards government, self-identity crisis, substitution of local diversity and choices by global demands for homogeneity, widened gap between the rich and the poor, and so on.The turning points that awake the government One of the t urning points in public opinion with respect to heritage preservation was the renewal of Lee Tung Street in Wanchai. This street was well known to all of Hong Kong as â€Å"The Wedding Card Street. † All the little shops provided all the props necessary to have a happy and prosperous Chinese wedding, giving this street an aura of vibrancy and joy. However, the urban renewal authority had targeted the whole street for renewal. Many of the shopkeepers were upset to be pushed out of the area as they felt want to stay here not just for business but also because they had established a community with neighborhoods from a few generations and therefore a strong emotional attachment with the place. There were many protests and banners expressing the dissatisfaction of the shopkeepers. The public outcry did not work to influence the government’s decision and the shops are now all closed awaiting redevelopment.Another turning point is the demolition of the Queen’s Ferry pie r along with its iconic clock tower in Wanchai in December 2006 as part of the traffic development plan for Wanchai. It has led to widely publicized protests and even hunger strikes that the government had not anticipated. Yet the citizens again lost in the battle to fight for public space. The pier was a â€Å"young† 49 years when it was destroyed and was not considered old enough by the authorities and, therefore, it did not have enough heritage value.Yet, to many Hong Kong people, the historic value of the pier is not measured only by its duration or by a number as of years or days, for time is also related to the question of memory, experience, moment. According to Local Action, a local group with hundreds of members that led the protests against the government with the goal of saving Hong Kong’s culture heritage and public space, â€Å"The pier is a symbol of Hong Kong history with strong socio-political significance for many social and political events took plac e at the pier.It had also been used by many royalties and governors as they came to Hong Kong and many demonstrations took place here, signifying its importance as a landmark† People expressed that it is also a place where their memories and experiences came from therefore they have developed a strong attachment to â€Å"their place†. This public reaction echoes John Urry in â€Å"Reinterpreting Local Culture from Consuming Placesâ€Å", in which John remarked that â€Å"the object signifies the place and that if the object were to be demolished or substantially changed then that would signify a threat to the place itself. †

The textile industry contributes approximately 46 percent to the total output or 8.5 percent of the country GDP. In Asia, Pakistan is the 8th largest exporter of textile products providing employment to 38 percent of the work force in the country. However, the textile industry currently faces massive challenges. The textile sector enjoys a pivotal position in the exports of Pakistan. In Asia, Pakistan is the 8th largest exporter of textile products. The contribution of this industry to the total GDP is 8.5%. It provides employment to about 15 million people, 30% of the country work force of about 49million. The annual volume of total world textile trade is US$18 trillion which is growing at 2.5 percent. Out of it, Pakistan’s share is less than one per cent. The development of the Manufacturing Sector has been given the highest priority since Pakistan’s founding with major stress on Agro-Based I ndustries. For Pakistan which was one of the leading producers of cotton in the world, the development of a Textile Industry making full use of its abundant resources of cotton has been a priority area towards industrialization. At present, there are 1,221  ginning units, 442 spinning units, 124 large spinning units and 425 small units which produce textile products. Pakistan’s textile sector earned US$5.77 billion during the 2003 year, compared with US$5.577 BILLION OF 2000-2001 indicating a growth of 0.69%. The total exports of textile sector in 2004 were US 5.7 billion which shows 2.5% growth it increase to 4% growth in 2005 as compared to 2004.The textile sector shows 8% negative growth in 2006.The negative growth continue in 2007 aslo with the value of 5%.The textile sector shows 15% growth in 2008. Now we will discuss the main reasons of crisis in textile industry step by step in detail. a. Lack of Modernize Equipment Moreover, critics argue that the textile industry has obsolete equipment and machinery. The inability to timely modernize the equipment and machinery has led to the decline of Pakistani textile competitiveness. Due to obsolete technology the cost of production is higher in pakistan as compared to other countries like India, Bangladesh & china. b. Raw material Prices Prices of cotton & other raw material used in textile industry fluctuate rapidly in Pakistan. The rapid increase in the price raw material effect the cost of production badly. The increase in raw material prices fluctuate rapidly due to double digit inflation. Sealand Logistics Solutions is helping textile oriented comanies with the help of logistics solutions in importing modern equipment and make valuable connections with reliable leading raw material provider at very competitive prices. INDUSTRY OVERVIEW Textile industry has the biggest share of Pakistan exports from raw material to finished goods in different global markets. During FY 2011-12 the country’s textile exports have drastically reduced by 10% to $12.529 billion against $13.975 billion of FY 2010-11. One of the major causes of underperformance is the persistent electricity and gas load shedding plaguing the industry which has hindered the performance and competitiveness of the textile industry. The consumer sentiments in US and EU remained bearish, causing a decline in textile related purchases. Up till March 2012,  global textile exports declined by 9.4 %. A major reason for this was excess stocks built up by the retailers and stuck up within the supply chain. It took almost a year for the supply chain to free itself from legacy stocks. Finally activity has started to pick up across large retailers in the west and we expect to see significant improvements this year. AUDITORS: The present auditor is Hyder Bhimji & Co. Chartered Accountant for Gul ahmed Textile retire and wait for other appointment, they have been winning the trust of Gul ahmed from 2009 to till today before that till 2007 were Gardezi & Co. Chartered Accountant. The Auditor statement for 2012 was as Balance sheet, P & L, Cash flow and other comprehensive income statement were in accordance with the Company Ordinance 1984, in our opinion proper books of account have been kept by the company’s ordinance, 1984. IMPORTANT KEY POINTS: Mr.Zain Basheer, Director of GAMT and son of Muhommad Ali Basheer Chairman of GAMT when found out that price of yarn was about to increase at the start of the 2012 year, realized that purchase of yarn in bulk quantity can result in big profits. So, he decided to purchase yarn in big quantity and as he planned GAMT invest a huge amount in buying yarn. But luck was not really in their favor and the price of yarn falls down with a big margin and they face a real difficult time and as a result their Cost of Sales increases which results in big losses in 2012 as compared to 2011 in which they hit the gigantic mark of 26 billion Rupee which made them the best textile in this era. Their Expenses also increase because they paid the big amount in Murabaha also in 2012. Interest Expenses and Taxation also shows the clear difference in 2012 from 2011 that also was one of the reason of losses. If you see on the vertical analysis Equity section their Capital and Reserves increase that is why the loss which fall to -1.25 from positive figure 5.23 hard to figure in overall equity section but the reserves was at the beginning of 2012, which means it was covered in 2011 and by the end of 2012 their reserves are less because of huge loss. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: Performance expectation after analyzing the financial statement of Gul ahmed is very good compared to any other textile mill. The Company’s sales amounting to Rs. 25,064 million is declined by 1.46% a compared to the corresponding year. Drop in exports have been compensated by increase in local sales. Decline in gross profit is due to the inflation without any corresponding increase in selling prices. During the fiscal year (FY) 2012 tight financial conditions, weak confidence and fiscal consolidation in various advanced economies hampered the economic progress. Many emerging economies were also hit by decreased investment and anticipated growth uncertainty, which led to equity price declines, capital outflows and currency depreciation. As perth World Economic Forum, the world GDP growth on YoY basis will drop from 4% in 2011 to about 3.5% in 2012. Domestically, GDP for FY 2012 was 3.7% (FY 2011: 3%) as per Economic Survey of Pakistan 2012. The increase was mainly due to the growth in commodity producing sectors, specially the agriculture sector in the country.Total investment and exports showed a significant contraction. The total investment, as a percentage of GDP, has fallen to 12.5% in FY 2012 (FY 2011:13.1%), which does not bode well for the future productive capacity of the economy. Inflation in June 2012 was 11.3% (June 2011: 13.1%) on YoY basis which was due to increase in energy and oil prices, supply disruptions due to heavy rains earlier at the start of the fiscal year and increased borrowings by the government. During the first half of the year 2012, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reduced the policy rate by 200 basis point lowering it to 12% and kept the rate unchanged during the second half. The reduction of 200 basis point was made to improve the falling private investment which is compromising the medium term productive capacity of the economy, and to control future inflation. After assessing the impact of reduction in the  first half, SBP realized that continued energy shortage is a major factor behind low demand for private credit for fixed investment. Return on Equity shows also a clear increasing trend for GATM, Equity is growing as it is a growing industry and in 2011 it shows a great impact in equity as it was the year which change the history for GATM they cossed the gigantic mark of 25 billion rupee then in 2012 it is slightly decreasing. Sales in Millions Lawsuits and contingencies: The Group owns and possesses a plot of land measuring 44 acres in Deh Khanto, which is appearing in the books at a cost of Rs. 64 million. The Group holds title deeds of the land which are duly registered in its name. Ownership of the land has been challenged in the Sindh High Court by some claimants who claim to be the owners, as this land was previously sold to them and subsequently resold to the Group. The claim of the alleged owners is fictitious. The Group is confident that its title to the land is secure and accordingly no provision has been made in these financial statements. The Honorable Sindh High Court has already restrained the City District Government of Karachi from taking any coercive action against the Group. No provision has been made there against in these financial statements as the Group is confident of the favourable outcome of the Petition. INVESTMENTS: By looking at the financial statements of GATM, we don’t find any unwise investment made by the company. The following information from cash flow gives a clear idea about all current cash generating from cash flows for the following year. Addition to property, plant & equipment. Would you recommend a buy/sell/hold on stock given on the current price stock prices? Why? Price targeted have been updates at GATM, if you see the present condition as investor’s overview Earning per share at year ended 2012 was (1.89) and P/E ratio was (11.17), a negative EPS numbers are usually reported as â€Å"not applicable† for quarter on which company reported  a loss. Investor buying a company with negative P/E should be aware that they are buying a share of a company that has been losing money per share of it’s stock. For now it is hard to recommend buy of stock unless it is better to hold it’s stock for some time because gulahmed past performance had been better on scale. What is Company’s secret? Gul-ahmed has always work on bringing innovation to the product development because they know the importace of being tech-savy and innovative from decades they have been working with the latest technology of that era. The installation of first full automatic wider width Air jet looms, 21 color rotatory printing machines and a modern laboratory in entering into 21st century, Another world-class idea came to our mind and retail outlet Ideas open in every part of the country. They have always been working on their U.S.P to make it better than others and it had paid off. At present they are working on high tech saving machines which is fully computerized and functions task of more than 20 men and this machine is only owned by GATM in Pakistan, this played major part in crossing gigantic mark of 25 billion rupee in 2011 which is by far the best output by any textile industry in Pakistan. Being tech-savy is the spirit implies two opposing forces of providing fast and flexible response to c ustomers, yet building efficient mechanisms and systems that are efficient and waste-free. The concept is to provide the right product and information, at the right time, in the right amount, in the right manner, while maintaining high standards of efficiency and cost control. IMC practices this contradictory idea in our daily activities to control their capital locked in inventory and to maintain a healthy customer relationship. Q7: Is it a growing/declining industry? It is a growing industy because if you see their progress from when they start they have reached the top of textile industry and serving it’s customer from more than last 50 years, they have always come up with new technology and innovative ideas. One of the current creative idea is, a 136.17 MW private power plant at Korangi Industrial Area of Karachi. The  project is a joint venture of Gul Ahmed Group, Toyoda Tsusho Corporation of Japan, International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Wartsila Diesel Oy of Finland. Gul Ahmed Energy Limited is backed by â€Å"GUL AHMED GROUP† which is one of Pakistan’s leading industrialist / business group since 1948 with a much diversified portfolio of trade, manufacturing, banking, industries, businesses and investments. Business ventures range from Finance, Energy, Beverages, Real Estate, Information Technology and Textile (the Group’s main forte) The Group is involved in the manufacturing of cotton yarns, grey and fini shed cloth and textile made ups and is one of the leading exporters of textile products from Pakistan Some of the companies forming part of the Group are provided below: Interpretation: Earnings per share is that amount you earn on every single ratio gulahmed is order to grab them and organization like gulahmed tries to maintain their goodwill with investor rather than giving them extra incentives and in 2012 they are negative, which is imposible for EPS because no one can pay negative value. CONCLUSION & FINDINGS: We as a Bank have walked upon a decision that we should gave the loan to Gul-ahmed after studying their financial statements they are a very growing organization. If we see their present condition in 2012, they are in loss but this was due to one bad decision by Director of GAMT which was made to amazed the world once again after 2011 gigantic mark sales in 2012 but it did not paid off. Financial ratios shows a slight change except R.O.E, E.P.S and P/E Ratios which are negative in 2012 as GAMT was in loss in present year. Before that E.P.S was growing and in 2011 it was 9.42 which is a very healthy earning per share.

Juvenile Justice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Juvenile Justice - Essay Example As a result it is at times difficult to understand the need for additional programs which are labeled as promising programs. These programs do not have the established record of delinquency prevention that the model programs do and must rely on data that is not always based in success but in the potential for success. The National Gang Center defines a promising program as the following. â€Å"Level 3 programs display a strong theoretical base and have been demonstrated to prevent delinquency and other child and youthful problems or to reduce risk factors or enhance protective factors using limited research methods (with at least single-group pretreatment and post treatment measurements). The programs in this category appear promising but must be confirmed using more rigorous scientific techniques. The main reason is that a control group is not required in the research design.† (Programs) Some of the available programs range from community based rehabilitation programs to prev ention based educational programs. The benefits of working programs are readily quantifiable however; they still must be proven to become model programs for future approaches. The process by which programs become model programs can be plagued with research problems as each researcher tends to have varying views as to what works and what does not.

Marketing Individual Reflective Report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Marketing Individual Reflective Report - Essay Example This paper is an individual reflection of a marketing report that was prepared by my group members and since it is an individual reflection, I will highlight what I acquired through the learning process and what I found out after research of my own abilities as well as that of marketing dynamics. Individually speaking, I am of the opinion that the challenge within the report was such that I had to seek alternatives as per its launch strategy. However I found out that the launch could have been done in a number of different ways but the best option was chosen for this report and hence we moved ahead with it. If I had another chance I would still choose the manner in which we moved ahead with this report because I believe this played the trick and brought in a number of positives for the report and indeed our understanding. It made us believe what we could learn and for my individual comprehension, I discerned that the manner in which marketing is done worldwide is something that I mus t ponder deep into, and thus give my very best day in and day out. Therefore I would not make any change if I am given another chance to implement my truest sense within the preparation of this marketing report (Copeland 2009). ...Same happened within this scenario as well where I worked my way through the tough times and gained upright knowledge and understanding regarding the Brakes Brothers which is a leading supplier of prepared and fresh food to caterers and restaurants around the United Kingdom. This experience helped me immensely at understanding how I need to shape up my work tasks and what I must do in order to learn and acquire new things which will bring me success at the end of the day (Kitchen 2004). As far as this success is concerned, I am of the view that the report on Brakes Brothers provided me a thorough understanding of how different forces shape up and what needs to be done in order to find out how the company operates within the whole of United Kingdom. This br ings in the much needed value for the end consumers. I would apply this knowledge within my future endeavours as it has helped me sustain the strengths and look after the weaknesses. As far as my work domains are related, I would surely apply the learned skills within my career aspirations and learn a number of new things which come directly under the aegis of marketing. The group work assisted me at comprehending how I need to move ahead with the changing times and thus learn new aspects of Brakes Brothers’ work routines and processes. Brakes Brothers is a very useful case study because it makes me understand how to gain an in-depth knowledge into the territories of growth within a business’ entirety and how the same can be translated across the board for the benefit of all and sundry – the stakeholders and customers in essence (Watkins 2005). I would make use of my knowledge that I have attained by pinpointing how

Imagine you are a small business owner Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Imagine you are a small business owner - Essay Example Net margin can be calculated dividing net income by total sales. The managers of small businesses must pay close attention to the profitability of the business as well as its cash flow position. The current ratio is a good ratio to analyze small businesses because it measures the liquidity of a company. It measures the ability of the company to pay off its short term debt. A current ratio is positive if is above 1.0. The inventory turnover ratio measures how many times a company sold its inventory during a year. The desired outcome is to have a high inventory turnover rate. Three ratios that are suitable to evaluate the financial performance of a large enterprise are return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and debt to equity ratio. Return on asset measures how well assets were employed by management, while return on equity measures the extent to which financial leverage is working for or against common stockholders (Garrison & Noreen, 2003). The debt to equity ratio is calcul ated dividing total liabilities by stockholder’s equity. B) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of debt financing and why an organization would choose to issue stocks rather than bonds to generate funds. Debt financing has become an extremely popular financing tool in today’s global economy. ... â€Å"Another advantage of debt financing is that interest paid on debt reduces tax burden of the business† (Kido, 2012). Despite the advantages of debt financing it also has cons. A drawback of debt financing is that in cases of business failure lenders have first option at the liquidating assets of a firm. A second drawback of using debt financing is the obligation to pay interest to the lenders. Sometimes interest expenses of debt instrument can be very high. A third con of debt financing is that if it is excessively used it can negatively impact the credit rating of the company (Simplyfinance, 2007). C) Discuss how financial returns are related to risk. Financial returns and risk are two factors that are positively related. This means that to obtain higher rewards managers must assume greater risk. In the stock market companies that have higher risk have a greater chance of equity appreciation. Risk adverse people try to stay away from risk. Being risk conservative can hel p a company minimize the risk of financial loss. â€Å"Financial risk is the loss probability arising from adverse price fluctuations in financial markets or business partner defaults† (Codjia, 2012). When companies get too greedy they often make bad business decisions by incurring in too much risk. Firms that have higher risk tend to have higher cost of capital. When the cost of capital is high the profitability of the company is adversely affected. D) Describe the concept of beta and how it is used. The beta coefficient is a measure of an asset’s risk in relation to the market or to an alternative benchmark or factor (Thefreedictionary, 2012). The average beta coefficient of the stock market is 1.0. When the beta coefficient of a company is higher than 1.0 the stock has

The Development of African Dance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Development of African Dance - Essay Example There are important aspects of African dance and music that have evolved into the modern times and greatly influenced contemporary art forms worldwide. For example, rap music and hiphop dance, while they are very much part of contemporary art forms of the youth, are new versions of traditional African culture.African dances are full of symbolism. One persistent aspect of African dance is a common dance-pattern that is depicted by a wide, sweeping circle around a group of musicians situated in the center. Despite historical changes to dance, the circle formation has proved to be very durable, despite attempts to break up the circle formation. James (2000) says that the moving circle that defines the inner space for the dancers is a symbol of the celebration of the culture’s distinctiveness, and this symbol could be traced through Africa’s history of political subjugation and social change. The pattern could also be found in dances in slave plantations in the New World, a s well as the Sudanese and Ethiopian region of the upper Blue Nile. The circle formation could is evident in the Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian art form which ritualizes movements from martial arts and games and combines these with dance. (Please see powerpoint presentation.) Capoeira was popularized as a Brazilian dance, but evidence supports that it is a folk dance form developed by African slaves from traditional African dances and rituals. While African dance has influenced dance in other cultures, some authors such as Loots (2006).

Assignment 1 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1

Assignment 1 - Essay Example From 16 August 1990 he had been detained in Bedford prison for the reason of deportation3. The second applicant had come to UK on 12 September 1975 as a result of her marriage to the case`s first applicant back in India, and she presently lives in Luton together with the two kids of the family, who are also the 3rd and 4th applicants. Home Secretary of the day resolved that the claimant needed to be deported from British since his continued presence in UK was never conducive for the public good citing reasons that were political in nature, that is, the international fight against terrorism. However, the claimant stood a real risk if deported to India since he would be tortured or killed by security forces. He resorted to applying an asylum. However, the UK court did not provide an asylum seeker the proper chance to argue the case. In establishing whether it has been substantiated that indeed there is a factual risk that the claimant, if expelled to India, was to be exposed to treatme nt that is contrary to Article 3, the British Court assessed all the material positioned before it. The role of the court here was to uphold the law and protect human rights, and so it had to trade carefully in this case. The expedient of the appointing security-cleared counsel, directed by the court, who was to cross-examine witnesses and in general help the court to investigate the strength of the case of State, served to demonstrate that there are techniques that can be applied which accommodate legitimate security concerns regarding the nature and intelligence information sources and yet accord the person a considerable measure of procedural justice. Enshrined in Article 3 is among the most fundamental values of a democratic society4. The British Court is much aware of the immense obstacles faced by States in the modern times concerning shielding their communities from the violence of terrorist. However, even under these circumstances, the court, as stipulated in British constit ution, still uphold the law and hold high the dignity of human rights. The Convention outlawed in absolute terms, inhuman, torture, degrading treatment or punishment, regardless of the victim’s conduct. Contrasting many of the substantive clauses in the Convention and in Protocols Nos. 4 and 1, Article 3 creates no provision for exceptions5. Moreover, no derogation originating from it is permissible according to Article 15 even if a public emergency arises that threaten the life of the nation. The legality of the detention of an individual with an aim of deportation did not rely on whether the underlying decision of deportation could be justified, and that the appellants had never dared to challenge his detention independently as opposed to a decision to deport him. The court held that expelling the claimant might engage the responsibility of the State, as stipulated in Article 3 where substantial justification are shown for believing that there would be factual risk on the d eportee of torture, inhuman, punishment or degrading treatment in the receiving country. Clause in Article 3 offers a complete prohibition of torture in the expulsion cases. The deportee`s conduct can never be a material consideration for British court in a situation where substantial grounds indicate that the deportee would definitely be at

Life science research from your locality - Essay Example The challenge is to extend systems biology over multiple scales to comprehend how subcellular processes control cell behavior and in turn, how interactions among cells lead to large scale organization at the tissue level. Such knowledge is key to unlocking the genetic foundations of morphological development and disease† (USU, 2011, par. 2). Personally, the technical definition encompassing the endeavor appears to be complex but deems to be extremely relevant in future medical and health applications. Through the genuine interest and commitment of scientists and scholars in various sciences, remarkable contributions have continued to emerge. The area of systems biology, when searched through the Google engine was defined as â€Å"an emergent field that aims at system-level understanding of biological systems† (Systems Biology, 2003, par. 1). Methodology and procedures - Research Proposal Example The survey used deductive, primary and secondary research, carried out by a combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection (Bryman & Bell, 2003). The main aim of the research was to investigate marketing strategies for low cost airlines. Apart from that, the study also investigated low cost airline customer behavior in different demographic aspects With the use of quota sampling and random sampling this research also included the collection of primary data. Quota sampling was chosen because it facilitates the choice of the group of participants which can be interviewed, for example: 60 males and 60 females between the age of 19-25, 25-45 and 45-65. In contrast random sampling helped to select participants based on pure chance. Simple random sampling was chosen because it removes the bias that may occur in the selection of the sample. It was helpful in making sure that the data was accurate and portrayed the aspirations of the whole population. The investigation of the ra ndom sampling showed that some students did not have enough experience to answer the questionnaire and it took the surveyor some time to guide them filling the questionnaires. Some students held discussions on their own project papers and therefore did not have enough time to answer the low cost airline questionnaire. The nature of this research mainly consists of qualitative questions. These questions assisted the researcher to study the marketing strategies of low cost carriers in Europe.... More questionnaires were collected from College Lane than De Havilland because De Havilland students spent more time on the discussion of their assignments and therefore did not have much time to answer the questionnaires. The primary research included both male and female students. Specific responses about travel offers will be supported with opinions and thoughts from electronic journals and websites. The questionnaire comprised of seventeen questions. There were 13 close-ended and 3 open-ended questions. Close-ended questions limit the responder's choices and specify certain options which the responders have to choose. It is also considered useful because if responders see too many questions in which they have write their opinion they feel like not filling the questionnaire. This was the reason why the majority of the questions in our survey were close ended. However, since these questions do not answer the problem and does not ask for opinion they are not very helpful in reaching the conclusions. As a result, we opted for four open ended-questions. Open-ended questions are those questions which normally ask for the responder's opinion rather than giving them choices to choose from. The greatest advantage of these questions is that it removes the bias that may occur due to limited choice and it gives greater freedom of expression. However, the reasons why the less open ended questions were asked than the close-ended questions were because they are time consuming and the survey may mi sinterpret the response. A subtle mix or balance of open-ended and close ended questions is necessary when designing a questionnaire for primary research. As a result, a lot of time was given to designing the questionnaire and

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Essay Example for Free

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Essay The conditions causing the psychological condition, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD has continued to become a puzzle to psychologists. Overtime, the symptoms for ADHD have undergone numerous diagnoses. Although the main cause of ADHD remains unknown, present evidences show that ADHD is genetically acquired (Lilly, 2007). ADHD is a mental disorder characterized by problems of hyperactivity and impulsiveness. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV, inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity are either or both of the two syndromes associated with this psychological disorder (House, 2002). ADHD is one of the most common mental disorders among children in the United States and it is believed that it affects 4 to 5 percent of the children in the country (Coile, 2004). ADHD often affects the school performance of the children. Because of the lack of attention and hyperactivity of children, it is difficult for them to concentrate on learning or educational activities (House, 2002). One of the speculated roots of ADHD is through heredity and genetics. Researches presented that ADHD runs in families. According to the Pediatric Annals, there is a 25 percent chance that the child of an adult with ADHD will also acquire the disease (Lilly, 2007). At present, since there is insufficient evidence on the real and exact cause of ADHD. Most researches consider the genetic explanation of ADHD as the most valid. It is believed that a particular gene is passed on from parents to children; this may be the inherent cause of ADHD. This can be well explained in identical twins. If one of the twins has ADHD, there is a greater risk that other will have it too (Driscoll, 2007). Researches firmly suggest that ADHD occurs in cluster within families. ADHD occurs in biological relatives of children or adults with the disorder, implying the strong hereditary cause of the disorder. An ADHD twin studies found out that identical twins are most likely to manifest symptoms of ADHD, and this finding is consistent in all studies conducted (Joseph, 2006). One of the comprehensive reviews in the twin studies is made by Jay Joseph where he examined the continued misinterpretation on the findings of the twin studies. He firmly believed that the similarities manifested by the twins are not presenting the possible genetic influences on ADHD but this may lie on the environmental factors experienced by the twins (Southhall, 2007). The twin studies are crucial theoretical assumptions. Some researchers claim that the studies are not supported by sufficient evidences. The study merely focused on identical twins, but there are fraternal twins and considered that the environmental factors are equal, there are changes in the findings. Since the evidences is deeply anchored on identical twins who are treated more alike and spend more time together and has a greater tendency to experience confusion and closeness, thus, in a controlled environment, it is expect that the identical twins will correlate higher than the fraternal twins on ADHD measures (Joseph, 2006). ADHD twin studies are based on unsupported theoretical assumption and offer only a possible genetic influence on the symptoms of ADHD. These studies recorded are based more on the psychological bond, more similar treatment and same environment experienced by identical twins than fraternal twins (Joseph, 2002). Another method of study used to discover the roots of ADHS is the adoption study. The difference of this approach on the twin studies is that, it is able to disentangle genetic and environmental influences on psychiatric disorders due to the genes that came from one family and was raised in the environment of another. The rules of hereditary and environmental influences or the nurture and nature influences are relevant in this study of ADHD causes (Joseph, 2002). In this approach, participants are obtained from families with adopted children and families with their biological children, who both have ADHD and same type of families without the psychological disorder. However the research is proven to have a flaw; it is unable to consider the biological parents and relatives of the adopted children. This may contain pertinent information on the genetic influence of ADHD. Therefore, the researchers were not able to make a definite comparison on the foster and biological families of the adopted children. Another flaw of the research is that hyperactivity of the parents is solely based on recollections of the parents if they experienced symptoms of ADHD when they were young. This method and data are unreliable for the having the possibility of giving false accounts (Joseph, 2002). The fundamental assumption of the adoption studies is that ADHD is more prevalent in biological families than in families with adopted children. The studies found higher rates of hyperactivity in children and their biological parents than children with adoptive parents (Joseph, 2002). It is reasonable to dismiss the conclusions of the adoption studies since it did not perform blind diagnoses and introduced a genetically-biased research with conclusions favoring genetics. The control group is unable to serve its purpose if the researchers know the participants related to the cases and which belongs to the control group (Joseph, 2002). Now, psychiatric geneticists see children inheriting a predisposition that will eventually develop into ADHD in the presence of unknown environmental factors which might include viruses and toxins (Joseph, 2002). Though the genetic influences are believed to be the most valid cause of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), they seem to only give possible genetic assumptions and add to the incomplete puzzle of the real cause of ADHD, as the root cause of the psychological disorder targeting most of our children is still unknown.

Attitudes Towards Accents: The Scouse Accent

Attitudes Towards Accents: The Scouse Accent Introduction An accent is an oral expression, a precise pronunciation within a particular language. Accents can often be confused with dialects which are varieties of language that differ in vocabulary and syntax. Commonly, people do not believe that they themselves possess one, however it is impossible for anybody to speak without using an accent. Accent variation is an important part of sociolinguistics because people often attach significance to different accents. This study concerns attitudes towards accent variation; the accent at the centre of this study is the non-standard accent of English, Liverpool English, commonly referred to as Scouse. Liverpool English is one of the most recognisable accents in the country, and arguably, the world. The Scouse accent is infamous for its harsh, nasal tones and despite some similarities; it is distinctly different to the accents of the surrounding areas. A famous linguist, Fritz Spiel, once described the accent as ‘one-third Irish, one-third welsh, and one-third catarrh The accent is widely known for its negative stereotypes and the reason for this study is to investigate the hypothesis that Students at the University of Wales, Bangor have a positive attitude towards the Liverpool accent. Accent variation is often most noticeable within the vowels used in pronunciation, however with the scouse accent, both the vowels and the continents are affected by the accent. The accent of an individual can often reveal information such as where they come from. However accents can also invite stereotypical judgements of social class, wealth and levels of education. The Liverpodlian accent has been heavily influenced by the Irish accent, for example Liverpudlians tend to pronounce the letter ‘H and ‘Haitch. The huge success of The Beatles in the 1960s, a band who were all originally from Liverpool, helped to publicise the city of Liverpool in a positive way and encouraging the accent to be perceived as friendly. And a more recent positive change saw Liverpool become Britains favourite location for call centres (Ward, 2000). Despite these positive changes, which succeeded in generating a more positive public image for the city, a significant stigmatic view of the accent still appears to remain in modern society and this study will outline whether these stereotypical viewpoints are held by the students of the University of Wales, Bangor. Theoretical background In 1975 a study was conducted by Giles and Powesland using a method called the matched-guise technique. This technique involved playing a recording of a speaker imitating different accents and then asking participants to rate the speaker on different categories such as attractiveness or social status. The study found that standard accents such as RP were more likely to be associated with a person who is a prestigious and articulate speaker. However, accents associated with urban areas were considered unattractive and thought to be spoken by low-status speakers. Rural accents were regarded as being aesthetically pleasing but inferior to RP in terms of social status. This particular study was repeated by an undergraduate student Sarah Wood (Stockwell 2002) who replicated the study but made some adjustments such as only using native speakers of the accents in her recordings and used all female students in their 20s in order to control gender and age to improve the analysis. Her study c oncluded that southern accents attracted the highest ratings in most categories and the northern accents came out worst, with the urban accents being the most stigmatized. These studies highlight the stigma attached to particular accents and may be an important factor in the attitudes of the students of Bangor, towards the Liverpudlian accent. The Liverpool English accent has been regarded in society as being ill educated and low prestige. This stereotypical view could well be influenced by the medias representation of Liverpudlians, who are often portrayed in a negative or criminal way. In 2004, the BBC conducted an online poll to determine attitudes towards the accents and languages in the British Isles. The poll, of which there were 5000 participants, concluded that Asian, Liverpool and Birmingham accents were â€Å"unpleasant to listen to and lacking in social status† (BBC, 2004). In addition to this, participants were asked to rank celebrities by how pleasant their accents are. The Liverpudlian accents of celebrities Cilla Black and Paul o Grady were received negatively by participants. Another survey of 1000 participants, conducted by Bury Technologies, also concluded that the accent is unpopular, as Liverpool came out at the bottom of the poll of British accents. One third of Liverpudlians who took part in t he nationwide survey admitted to changing or calming down their accent whilst being interviewed for a job in order to benefit their career. Methodology To collect the relevant data, an online survey was conducted, in which participants were asked two questions. In the first question, participants were asked to state which words came to their minds when thinking of the Liverpudlian accent. Secondly participants were asked whether they thought there should be an increase in the amount of Liverpudlian accents within the media, and their reasons for this. The Questionnaire was sent to Students at Bangor University only to complete. A recording of a Liverpudlian speaker was obtained for the study. The person in question was asked to talk for a short period of time about any subject in order for us to provide the participants with a firm understanding of the accent in question. The Individual being recorded held many of the typical scouse accent traits. To ensure that the data was easily comparable, a multiple choice questionnaire was produced for the study. The questionnaire consisted of ten questions concerning personal characteristics and social status, such as ‘polite or impolite of which the students had to tick the statement that they were in most agreement with. The Participants, all students from Bangor University, were each played the recording and asked to complete a multiple choice questionnaire designed to obtain the students personal opinions and expectations of this person based entirely upon their Liverpudlian accent. Results Of the ten respondents to the online survey, the most commonly used words used to describe Liverpudlians were negative words such as ‘chav, ‘criminal ‘thief. However positive words such as ‘friendly were also used more than once. In response to an increase in Liverpudlian speakers in the media, the majority of the participants were in favour of the increase, either due to their being a lack of them in the media currently or because they particularly enjoy the sound of the accent. Two of the respondents remained neutral; however one stated that despite being neutral they find the accent to be ‘one of the ugliest in the country. The final 3 respondents were against the idea, all claiming that the accent was difficult to understand. The recording of the accent received a great deal of negative responses such as ‘generally unpleasant sounding, ‘common, ‘irritating, loud and ‘rough, harsh sounding. On the contrary some participants responded positively, describing the accent as ‘friendly and ‘a nice sound The answers to the questionnaire support the common stereotype of ‘scousers, with the majority of respondents assuming that the Liverpudlian would be untrustworthy, impolite, unfriendly, not wealthy, not educated past GCSE level, not in full-time employment and not have a high IQ level. On the slightly more positive side the majority of respondents assumed the Liverpudlian would not have criminal record, be average looking, and passive. Discussion The study was limited to one particular social community. Only students at the University of Wales, Bangor were asked to participate and therefore the results are not statistically significant. The study only involved 30 participants and is not reflective of a large enough scale for the data to be considered representative on behalf of all of the students at the University. A substantial flaw in the methodology of this survey is that the person on the recording was not reading from a particular script or text. His chosen dialogue may have influenced the opinions of the participants and their results may not have been an accurate reflection of their view of the accent itself, but rather of this particular personality. A more beneficial approach to the study would have been to have the speaker to read a text that was specifically written to contain accent variants of the Liverpudlian accent as this would have provided an accurate representation of the accent being discussed. Within the recording the speaker expresses certain opinions and makes personal comments, this kind of speech could have easily affected the opinion of the students, particularly regarding questions of politeness and friendliness. The individual also made a comment when discussing his accent that ‘no UK residents tend to like it. This information could have influenced a previously unbiased participant who took part in the survey as it shows the accent in a negative light and implies that having a dislike towards the accent is a common response. To have had the speaker read from a given text would have neutralised any alteration in his speech that may have occurred due to the subject or unscripted nature of the recording. Also the study may have benefitted from having a speaker with a broader accent, as although it was clearly a Liverpool accent; it wasnt particularly strong which could be misleading by not presenting the students with a typical, strong Liverpudlian accent. The background of the students could have influenced their level of loyalty towards Liverpool and the accent. The students chosen for the survey should have been restricted to those without a particular devotion towards to city, such as it being their hometown or birthplace. Having impartial participants would have resulted in a more accurate and honest representation of the students point of view as oppose to the student giving a positive view based on blind faithfulness rather than the accent. Conclusion This questionnaire assessed the students levels of expectations regarding the personality and social attributes of a person with a Liverpudlian accent. The following graph interprets the gathered data in terms of the students expectations of the speaker after hearing the recording. An overall view of the data suggests that the students involved in the study, on average had negative opinions regarding an individual with a scouse accent, particularly in terms of honesty and social class. This study was performed using only a small sample of students from one university, which is not a good basis for investigating this hypothesis. The study would have to be repeated and carried out on a much bigger scale for the information to be representative of all the students at the University of Wales, Bangor.

The Anasazi Indians Essay -- essays research papers

The Anasazi Indians   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  From the scattered references made about the ancient Anasazi Indians in Tony Hillerman's A Thief of Time, one can identify several cultural characteristics of this mysterious tribe. One can discover how they lived, where they lived, their religion, simple day to day activities, and mysteries about their culture. Even though many references are made about this tribe, people will never know the truth, for there is an unsolved mystery to why the Anasazi disappeared. Even to this day no one knows what happened to them.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The location of over 100,000 Anasazi sites have been found outside of Bluff, Utah along the San Juan river. Anasazi Indians were very picky as to where they lived. They chose to dwell in cliffs faced to catch the winter sun and shaded in summer, with enough floodplain to grow something and a source of water. These two story stone dwellings in cliffs were built large enough to fit 30 people in them. There is one odd fact about this: the Anasazi supposedly carried roof beams more than 50 miles from the forests of Mt. Taylor and Chuskas. These Indians lived as small scattered families of hunters and seed gatherers. They developed agriculture, learned to make baskets and irrigate.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Anasazi religion was very different compared to other religions of the world. Anasazi Indians chose to bury their dead either in the trash or against walls. The ghosts of the A...

Are You Kidding? :: Up From Slavery Booker T. Washington Essays

Are You Kidding? Booker T. Washington’s Up From Slavery is an autobiography describing a man’s journey from slavery to prominence. Or is it? Mr. Washington’s complete assimilation into the white man’s world could be seen as an example of complete and total sycophancy, a lesson in sucking up. Booker T. Washington knew that in order to further the Tuskegee Institute, a school in the south, he would need the help of the very race and culture that had imprisoned him and his people. Long before his association with southern, black schools, Booker T. Washington knew exactly what he didn’t want out of life. He didn’t like being poor. Being raised on a plantation, he learned very early in life, that if you appeased the white man, you could live in relative peacefulness. If you went a little further and assimilated into their culture, you could achieve a certain amount of prominence. From the very beginning, Booker T. Washington learned that playing the role of the grateful, black man would allow him to achieve his goals in life. He wrote that he had â€Å"†¦long since ceased to cherish any spirit of bitterness against Southern white people on account of the enslavement of my race†(10). He goes so far as to comment â€Å"†¦notwithstanding the cruel wrongs inflicted upon us, the black man got nearly as much out of slavery as the white man did†(10). Could he really be suggesting that anyone enslaved and stripped of an identity could possibly benefit from it? He claims that there existed â€Å" no feeling of bitterness†¦ † only â€Å"†¦pity among the slaves for our former owners† (13). Could this statement be truly realistic? If a person is to believe that anyone could feel anything but bitterness is ridiculous. The only reason for this deliberate misrepresentation of the truth must be to fulfill anot her agenda. He continues throughout his autobiography to continually depict his encounters with whites in the most favorable light. General Samuel C. Armstrong, obviously a soldier in the Civil War, is described as â€Å"†¦the noblest, rarest human being that it has ever been my privilege to meet† (32).

Authorial Comments in Ike Oguine A Squatters Tale :: Squatters Tale Essays

Authorial Comments in A Squatter’s Tale According to Charles Bohner and Dean Dougherty authorial comment is: An explanatory remark obviously put into the narration by the author. Authorial commentary tells us what to think instead of showing us. (1212) Authorial comment, as clearly defined above, is an artistic device used by authors to paint a vivid picture of a point they are trying to make. This gives the reader of a text the opportunity to deduce the point. Comments made in literary works such as fictional novels usually guide the reader into thinking in a certain way, which depending on the level of understanding of the reader can have various analyses. But in order for authors to prevent their being misunderstood by their readers, the use of authorial comment is added in their works. It is interesting to see how Ike Oguine uses authorial comments in A Squatter’s Tale to drive points home. His placement of the the comments and the depth of those comments add a lot of creativity to this literal work of art. Although he uses other artistic devices such as sarcastic humor and symbolism, the qualities of these devices are enhanced by authorial comments as exemplified by the following analyses. In the beginning, Obi has just arrived in the United States in pursuit of the American dream. Upon arrival at the airport though, Obi realizes that â€Å" America turns your world upside down† (Oguine 15). In fact, this is true to the majority of characters in the text, as well as, real immigrants who enter the country. The truth in this statement is usually realized once an individual arrives in the country. Most people have hopes of coming and making enough money to go back to their homeland and establish themselves, but once the disappointment of having no one to rely on and reality of coping with the standard of living in the country hit them, they lose hope of going back home in the next couple of years. Some give up their dreams totally and try to live out in their children. The author realistically portrays this in his text with Obi. At first, Obi is a big shot in Nigeria, but once he arrives into this country, his life is clearly turned upside down starting with Hook, his friend, not picking him up at the airport.

Organizational Culture and Innovation Essay

Organizational culture is very important in the pursuit of innovation, which is the major source of competitive advantage in the world today. Organizational culture is central to a company’s pursuit of innovation because it refers to the beliefs, values, attitudes, tradition and overall practices within and without an organization (Hill & Jones, 2001). If the culture of the organization permits creative thinking and entrepreneurship, then innovation can certainly flourish. If the organizational culture, however, is very strict and adheres too much to its cherished traditions, routines and way of doing things, then innovation may be stifled and the organization will just rely on what has been tried and tested before. Such culture of adherence to past successes and ways of doing things will be inimical to the performance of the organization in the long run. As new factors, trends and issues in the market appear, the organization should continue to innovate and seek for ways to deliver better products and services that their clients will patronize. An innovative organization will always learn how to make best use of trends and emerging factors in its environment. There are several elements of organizational culture that can either encourage or hinder the pursuit of innovation (Johnson, 1988). The paradigm or the statement of vision and mission of the organization defines what it is all about and from there all activities in the organization are derived. There are also processes, structures and policies in place in the organization. These formal structures can enable innovation in the organization if it is not stringent and strict enough to stifle innovations. The power structures and the character of decision makers can encourage innovation. If there is openness in the leadership, this will trickle down to the grassroots level of the organization and will provide a rich backdrop where innovation can be cultivated. On the other hand, a leadership that puts a premium on seniority and too much authority fosters an adherence to established rules of conduct within the organization. In such a case, the pursuit of innovation may even be looked down as an act of insubordination. The symbols valued by the organization are also important in stimulating innovation and change. Is change and innovation valued in the organization? Are efforts to this end recognized and valued? This is also further exemplified by the rituals and routines in the organization. As innovation becomes praised and recognized throughout the organization, the members of the organization will be motivated to pursue innovation. As the formal structures encourage and praise innovation, so will it extend to the informal stories and myths of the organization. This way, ordinary employees and people at the bottom level of the organizational hierarchy will talk about the importance of innovation in the organization. Organizational culture can work for the pursuit of innovation in any given company or corporation. Organizations should deliberately work for the integration of innovation awareness in all levels. When this happens, the organization will become entrepreneurial, always looking out for means to improve and excel on their chosen niche in the market. With innovation, the organization can continue with its usual activities and it can even expand its operations to other areas where it can perform best. An organizational culture that fosters innovation is a must in this highly competitive world.

Labor Movement Development in Chile: 1990 to Present

Chile underwent a change in 1990 to a classless form of government. As a emergence of this transformation to democracy, the labor send awayment at heart Chile has undergone massive development. As developments find been undergone, several areas of the labor movement feed especially experienced change, including embodied bargaining, infra the prior authoritarian rule of Augusto Pinochet, collective bargaining negotiations by labor units was rigorously siced to initial wage readjustments, the eon period for inflationary adjustments, and the levels of inflation adjustments. (Frank, 2002) In his in-depth study of the labor movement in Chile, Professor Volker K. Frank explicitly states that the around(prenominal) important of all changes concerns the raw police force on collective bargaining. The repossess that came about during the beforehand(predicate) 1990s mixed a masss last offer to a union and their rights to proceed with the business of their lot based on the union reaction, as well as the rights of the union to rap music based on a corporation following certain criteria.Because the basic reforms that impacted the labor movement in the early 1990s fell short, more reforms were enacted in the middle 1990s. Professor Frank explains that This new legislation envisions major changes that would and then limit the employers abusive powers, which a very on the table labor market has given them in the first place. In this sense, unlike the first reform of 199092, this second one does move much more toward a preventive labor market.
